What is a load cell?

A load cell is a sensor that measures force, converts it to an electrical signal, and displays it on an electronic scale as a unit of mass or torque.

Load cells can be classified in two ways: By how they generate output signals or by how they detect weight. Output signals include pneumatic, hydraulic, and strain-gauge. Weight detection includes bending, shear, tension and others.

Pneumatic load cells usually measure lower weights with high degrees of accuracy. Hydraulic load cells measure water, most notably in tanks. Strain-gauge load cells are affixed to support beams and measure any force exerted on the beam.

How Load Cells Work

A load cell converts a force applied to it –tension, compression, or pressure – into an electrical signal. The strength of the signal is directly proportional to the force applied.

Strain gauge load cells are the most commonly used type of load cells in industrial applications. The body, or spring element, of an industrial load cell is composed of a minimally flexible metal on which strain gauges have been secured. When force is applied, the spring element deforms slightly, but is elastic enough to return to its original shape.

As the shape of the spring element changes, so does the shape of the strain gauges attached to it, increasing or decreasing the electrical resistance. When a current is sent through the strain gauges, the resistance variation is reflected in the measured voltage output, and the weight of the object can then be determined.

Multiple strain gauges ensure a high degree of accuracy in load cells.
